Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)
Golfer’s elbow is a form of tendonitis and is similar to tennis elbow except the pain occurs on the inside of the elbow. It is not as common as tennis elbow and is usually a result of excessive bending of the wrist towards the palm of your hand.
Symptoms of Golfer’s Elbow:
Pain at the inner elbow that radiates down your inner forearm is a symptom of golfer’s elbow. You may also experience weakness and pain in your hand or wrist. Golfer’s elbow makes it difficult to shake hands, make a first, or turn your wrist side to side.
Causes of Golfer’s Elbow:
Although golfers are subject to this form of tendonitis because of how they swing their club, golfer’s elbow can also be the result of certain racquet sports. Any repetitive activities like raking, painting, hammering, or using a screwdriver can cause strain in your inner elbow.
Treatment of Golfer’s Elbow:
Your elbow is a sensitive and complex joint that should be treated carefully with ultrasound, Kinesio tape, manual therapy, arm stretches, and strengthening exercises. These types of physical therapy treatments will promote tendon healing, restore normal range of motion, and rebuild muscle strength. Ultrasound and Kinesio tape is needed to improve blood flow, increase tissue flexibility, reduce muscle spasms, and ease the pain.
Manual therapies like massages are extremely helpful at reducing scar tissue and inspiring new blood vessels to replace the damaged tissue. There are also specific exercises that will improve the mobility in your elbow and help you regain your arm strength. The right combination of massaging and exercising the inflamed elbow area will help you restore normal use of your hand and elbow.
